Since 1952 when Stu’s grandparents starting milking cows, there have been a few changes in the way that it’s done. Traditionally we ran a mainstream cow farm milking all year round with about 220 cows all up on a Fonterra contract. We noticed over the past 10 years that more people were wanting fresh milk non pasteurised and non homogenised. Because we know the benefits of drinking fresh milk we set-up in a franchise with Village Milk about 2 years ago. This involves milking a small herd of cows separately and they get special treatment with cleaning and milking preparation. When the MPI rules were changed this year the franchise had to be disbanded and we rebranded as Real Milk Timaru. We will continue to supply fresh milk under the usual excellent standards that we have. In conjunction with this we have started the home delivery service within Timaru, as we realised that many people don’t have the time to come down to the farm for their milk and this will start as a 3 day a week service and we look forward to giving more people a fresh milk experience.
